As President Moon Jae-in’s New Year’s press conference was held for the first time both online and offline on the morning of the 18th, there was a tense atmosphere in the Blue House until the conference. The working-level team seemed to make every effort to prevent a broadcast accident by conducting rehearsals four times until the morning of the day. Until just before the press conference, the microphone sound quality of reporters connected via online video was checked one by one, centering on the medical secretary Tak Hyun-min, who was in charge of the interview. Considering the Corona 19 situation, 20 reporters attended the conference and 100 attended the online video. On this day, the interview was conducted’without a script’ for about 2 hours without prior collection of questions. Before the interview began in earnest, President Moon said, “Non-face-to-face video conferences are the first way we do. So I’m worried that it will go smoothly, but I hope that this will be a time when we can cooperate with each other to create good communication and to answer questions to the people.” Reporters had their license plates distributed in advance, and President Moon called the numbers they had. A’chat query’ was also prepared for reporters who could not participate in the field or video. As soon as the press conference began, the first question was the issue of amnesty to former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye. When the talk of the pardon came out as the first question, President Moon looked forward to the question, but hesitated for a moment to answer. President Moon said, “I was worried a lot because I said that pardon would be the most important question, but I decided to honestly say my thoughts.” President Moon drew a line on the amnesty theory, saying, “I think it is difficult for the president to exercise unilateral pardons that are not based on public consensus.” President Moon, who didn’t look at the prepared papers well even at the parliamentary field speeches close to 30 minutes, looked carefully at the papers that seemed to have prepared details while answering the amnesty. Soon after, when the talk of Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae and Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol came out, President Moon said, “Uh… “I was thinking about the answer for 1~2 seconds. President Moon avoided an immediate answer to the reporter’s question,’What kind of discussions have you exchanged between Minister Chu and General Yoon’s discipline? I am sorry to the people because it seems that the conflict has emerged in the process.” President Moon approved the two-month suspension of President Yoon, but it was similar to the position the Blue House put out on December 25 last year, the day after the court suspended it. No additional questions came up after President Moon evaluated him as “the prosecutor general of the Moon Jae-in administration in one word,” with regard to Yoon.

At the conference that day, mainly political questions were poured out. The Blue House selected’quarantine and politics’ as the first field of question, but as politics-related questions arose, President Moon said, “I hope that only those who have questions about quarantine will listen to the sign. I’m so good at quarantine, so I don’t have many questions.” On this day, the conference was divided into quarantine/social, political/economic, diplomatic and security fields, but as questions were poured out online and offline, it was not conducted in order of each field. There were cases in which the connection was lost due to the parallel online video connection. When a reporter’s question was interrupted and heard because the connection wasn’t smooth, Jung Man-ho, chief of public communication, asked for patience, saying, “I will pass it to the next order.” In addition, when the question of a foreign reporter connected by video was mixed with the noise and it was difficult to hear, the interpreter twice said,’Please ask a question again.’ Other reporters in the Blue House who were unable to participate in the limited number of online and offline interviews posted questions in the chat window, and at the end of the interview, additional questions were sent to President Moon. The press conference lasted for 123 minutes, adding 20 minutes to the scheduled 100 minutes. By Seo Young-ji, staff reporter
