Exports to KRW 7.2 trillion, up 2.9% from the previous year
[투데이에너지 송명규 기자] It is found that the market share is continuously expanding, with batteries such as secondary batteries manufactured in Korea recorded 7.2 trillion won in exports last year.
On the 18th, Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Park Jin-gyu visited Misomsystech, a secondary battery solution company, to encourage employees and emphasize the government’s willingness to foster the secondary battery industry. Misumsystech produces secondary battery battery management system (BMS) and battery packs, starting with secondary battery inspection equipment, and recently completed the development of battery packs for electric motorcycle battery replacement platforms.
The battery-replaceable platform is a system that safely charges and efficiently manages the battery through a common charging facility instead of individual chargers for personal mobility (PM, Personal Mobility: electric motorcycles, electric bicycles, kickboards, etc.). Short driving distance, long charging time It is expected as a way to improve the problems of existing electric motorcycles such as compatibility between batteries.
Deputy Minister Park said, “Last year, the domestic secondary battery industry has grown significantly based on the expansion of global electric vehicle demand, and the market share of domestic companies has also greatly expanded, solidifying its position as a food industry in the future following BIG3 (system semiconductor, bio health, future car). Evaluated.
In addition, Vice Minister Park said, “As the demand for various fields including mobility, home appliances, robots, and drones expands, the rechargeable battery industry is expected to grow further.” “The Ministry of Industry and Industry is expected to develop technology, prove, safety technology, We will not spare full support such as standardization,” he added.
On that day, the Ministry of Industry announced that the market share of the electric vehicle battery market of the three domestic companies has more than doubled from 16% in 2019 to 34% in 2020.
According to the Korea Battery Industry Association, major indicators such as secondary battery production, exports, and domestic demand rose significantly in 2020 despite the worsening economic situation due to Corona 19. In 2020, the scale of global secondary battery production by domestic companies increased by 20% from KRW 2.3 trillion (lithium ion battery KRW 20 trillion, etc.) compared to KRW 19 trillion in 2019, and exports were KRW 7.2 trillion ($6.5 billion, 2.9 trillion). %↑) for 5 consecutive years. In particular, lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (1,100 billion won, 1.40 billion dollars in 2019 → 1.3 trillion won, 1.1 billion months, 10.6%↑) led the overall exports.
Domestic demand also increased by 11.6% year-on-year to 5.7 trillion won, which is a major factor because the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles increased along with the increase in domestic electric vehicle production (103,000 units in 2019 → 139,000 units in 2020, 33.8%↑). .
As the global electric vehicle (EV) market scale has expanded, domestic companies’ production, export, and domestic demand have all increased, centering on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, which leads Korean companies to take the lead in the rapidly growing electric vehicle battery market in major countries such as Europe, the United States, and China. It is evaluated as the result of the response.
The market share of major domestic secondary battery manufacturers such as LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation has also improved significantly. As of November 2020, the combined market share of the three companies was 34%, which is more than doubled from 16% in 2019. In 2021, production is expected to reach a record high of 31 trillion won (32% increase) and exports of 7 billion dollars (5.7% increase).
The demand for rechargeable batteries is expected to increase significantly as downstream industries such as electric vehicles and ESS are expanding due to eco-friendly policies of major countries such as Europe, the US, and China. In response to the expansion of the secondary battery market, competition is heating up, such as expanding competitive facility investment and entering the market by new companies, but for the time being, it is expected that the system centered on the top six companies in Korea, China, and Japan will continue.
In particular, the domestic market for secondary batteries in 2021 is expected to reach 5 trillion won (24.1%↑) due to the launch of an electric vehicle platform (Hyundai E-GMP) and new models.
