Jonathan Vegas abstains from the Sony Open due to Corona 19.
[헤럴드경제 스포츠팀= 남화영 기자] Jonathan Vegas (Venezuela) abstained from the US Pro Golf (PGA) Tour Sony Open Cuts (total prize money of $6.6 million: 7.7 billion won) due to the confirmed coronavirus infection (Corona 19).
Vegas, 36, announced on his Twitter on the 13th (Korean time) that he would abstain from the event held at the Waialay Country Club (par 70 7044 yards) in Honolulu, Hawaii due to the confirmed corona 19. He wrote, “Unfortunately, it was confirmed positive by the Corona 19 test, so I could not compete in the next two competitions, but I will come back because I am stronger than now.”
Vegas won 3 wins on the PGA Tour until the 2017 RBC Canadian Open and also competed in the Presidents Cup that year. However, he did not compete in the FedEx Cup playoffs last year, and this season, only one was in the 25th place in the competition. On behalf of Vegas, Seamus Power got the right to play.
This year, the second player to abstain from Corona 19 after Jim Herman (USA) last week. Webb Simpson and Zander Sherpiley (above the United States) were confirmed at the end of last year, but were able to compete in Maui, Hawaii as they were measured negative in the pre-competition test.
Seven Korean players will participate, including Lim Seong-jae (23), and Heo In-hoe, who won a ticket in the Monday qualifying round.
