According to the’December 2020 and Annual Employment Trends’ data released by the National Statistical Office on the 13th, the number of employed employees per year last year was 26.94,000, down 218,000 from the previous year.

This is a number that has decreased for 10 consecutive months since March of last year, when the Corona 19 incident in earnest, and the number of employed in December recorded the lowest at 26526,000, a decrease of 628,000 from the same month last year.

This decline in the number of employed is the largest in 11 years since 2009 (-87,000 people) right after the financial crisis, and the largest decrease in 22 years since 1998 (-1276,000 people) during the financial crisis.

By industry, the number of employed in the face-to-face service industry such as wholesale and retail (160,000 people), accommodation and restaurants (-159,000 people), and education service (-86,000 people) decreased the most.

By age group, all classes except those aged 60 or older (375,000 people) showed a significant decline, and those in their 30s (-165,000 people) and 40s (-158,000 people), who were active in economic activity, showed a serious decline .

In addition, the deterioration of the job market was remarkable in various indicators such as the unemployed and inactive population.

Last year, the number of unemployed people increased by 45,000 compared to the previous year to 1.18,000, the highest number since 2000, which can be compared by year. In addition, the unemployment rate reached 4.0%.

The inactive population was 16,773,000, the largest increase since 2009 (495,000), and the number of job seekers increased by 43,000 to 791,000.

An official from the National Statistical Office said, “Due to the corona 19 impact, the number of employed has decreased, mainly in the face-to-face service industry.”
