‘Effect of decrease in school-age population, increase in number (a) difficulty’

[베리타스알파=유다원 기자] At the time of 2021, the competition rate of 38 medical schools nationwide was finalized at 5.95 to 1 on a per quota basis. Initially, the number of people to be recruited was 1128, but 124 people carried over from time to time, a total of 1,252 people were recruited, and 7445 people applied. Compared to last year’s 6.21 to 1 (1255/7796), the number of recruits decreased by 3 and the number of applicants decreased by 351, showing a decline in overall competition.

The competition rate by recruitment group was 3.8 to 1 in the family (710 / 2668 people), 5.5 to 1 in the Na group (346 / 1908 people), and 14.6 to 1 in multiple groups (196 / 2668 people). While the competition rate of families, where 17 schools are recruited, declined, the competition rate of Na/Dagun increased compared to last year. It is a characteristic that the competition rate of multi-groups, which is relatively lacking in the alternatives of the high-ranking students, is formed the highest. Even on the basis of individual universities, all universities that had high competition rates were concentrated in multiple groups. Among the 38 medical schools in total, Inha University of Dagun took the highest competition rate. Inha University recorded an overwhelming competition rate of 25.67 to 1, with 231 applicants crowding for nine recruits. Inha University also applied for the same number of recruits last year with 227 applicants, recording the highest competition rate at 25.22:1. Next, Soonchunhyang University in Dagun 18.89-1 (38/718) and Dongguk University (Gyeongju) 14.55-1 (20/291).

This year, Kangwon University is newly joining the selection of medical school personnel, and 19 new students from the family are selected at the time of 2021. Kangwon National University’s Graduate School of Medicine (all medical students) confirmed the transition to medical school in the 2023 year, and entered medical school selection from the 2021 year. In addition to the regular expansion issue of medical schools, the number of recruits increased and the competition rate decreased in the process of transitioning to medical schools by universities that introduced the medical school system. The number of recruits according to the original plan for the 2021 period was 1128, an increase from 35 from 1093 last year. However, this year, the number of people carried over from time to time has decreased compared to last year, and the final number of on-time recruitment has decreased by three compared to last year.

Experts explain that the decline in the medical school competition rate at the time of 2021 was caused by a combination of a decrease in the school-age population and an increase in the absence rate due to Corona 19. In fact, according to the’Korean/foreign population outlook, which reflects the 2019 future population special estimate’ released by the National Statistical Office on October 15, this year’s elementary/secondary school age population decreased by about 13,000 from the previous year based on Koreans. As the school-age population is decreasing, it is analyzed that the resulting decline in competition was inevitable. However, it is unclear whether the decline in the competition rate will continue in the future. Experts believe that the phenomenon of preference for medical school among top-notch students will be strengthened according to the regular expansion. In addition, the fact that the issue of expanding medical staff is continuing, although it is being reviewed at the origin due to a strike by a major, is also a background that is drawing interest in medical school admission.

The decrease in the top ranks in the natural world due to the increase in difficulty of the number of SAT (A) seems to have affected the decline in competition rate. It means that there were many candidates who hesitated to apply because they did not get better grades than they expected. In the number (A), the standard score for the first grade category was 130 points, up from 128 points in the previous year, and the highest point of the mark was 137 points, higher than 134 points in the previous year. The higher the standard score, the more difficult the test is analyzed. This is because the highest score increases as the more difficult the SAT scores are for the relative position among the entire group.

Most of the medical schools are selected by 100% of the SAT. This year, 27 out of 38 schools that have been recruited on a regular basis will select those who pass the SAT with 100% without interview. In Gagun, Kangwon National University Konyang University Gyeongsang National University Kyunghee University Busan National University Yonsei University (future) Ewha Womans University Chonbuk National University Chosun University Chungnam University Chungnam University, Nagun University Gachon University Yeongnam University Wonkwang University Eulji University Chungbuk University Hallym University, and Dagun University Keimyung University Goshin University Dankook University Daegu Catholic University Dongguk University (Gyeongju University) Sooncheonhyang University. These universities also do not reflect the student department. Because of the regular nature of the SAT-centered admission, the selection is based on SAT scores.

The competition rate for 38 medical schools this year was 5.95 to 1, with 7445 applying for 1,252 recruits. Compared to last year, the number of recruits was reduced by 3 and the number of applicants was also reduced by 351, showing a slight decline in overall competition. The amount of carry-over has also decreased compared to last year. The number of people carried over from time to time this year was 124, down 28 from 162 last year.

Last year, 37 medical schools recorded a competition rate of 6.21 to 1, with 7796 applied to recruit 1,255 on time. This year, Kangwon University has joined the selection of medical schools and will select regular new students from 38 medical schools nationwide. Due to the influence of the joining of Kangwon National University, the number of recruits initially planned at the time of 2021 was 1128, an increase from 35 from 1093 last year. However, this year, the number of people carried over from time to time has decreased compared to last year, and the final number of on-time recruitment has decreased by three compared to last year.

The decline in the medical school competition rate seems to have been affected by the decrease in the top ranking in the natural world due to the increase in difficulty of the number of SATs. It means that there were many candidates who hesitated to apply because they did not get better grades than they expected. In the number (A), the standard score for the first grade category was 130 points, up from 128 points in the previous year, and the highest point of the mark was 137 points, higher than 134 points in the previous year. The score indicating the relative position among the entire group is analyzed as a difficult test as the standard score is higher because the highest score increases with the difficult SAT.

Experts explain that the decline in the school-age population and the absenteeism rate due to Corona 19 have also had a compound effect on the decline in the competition rate.

Among the 48 admissions for 38 medical schools, 21 are those with an increase in competition this year. Among the eight schools at Dong-A University, Gyeongsang National University, Chosun University, Chonbuk National University, Chungnam National University, Chonnam National University, Chungbuk National University, Jeju National University, which conducts the regional talent screening, the competition rate for regional talents has risen at 7 excluding Gyeongsang National University. On the other hand, the 27 screenings showed that the competition rate fell. Last year, it was reported that the competition rate rose in 23 of the 43 screenings, and the overall competition rate also rose.

At Seoul National University Yonsei University Sungkyunkwan University Catholic University Ulsan University, which is called the Big 5, all four schools except Yonsei University have increased their competition rate. The competition rate for Seoul National University, which is a family recruiter, rose from 2.77 to 1 (30/83) in 2020 to 3.63 to 1 (30/109) in 2021. This is the result of an increase of 26 applicants for the same recruitment. Nagun’s Sungkyunkwan University also rose from 4.2 to 1 last year (20/84) to 4.47 to 1 (19/85) this year. Although the number of recruits decreased by one, the number of applicants increased by one. In the Catholic University of Nagun, the number of applicants for the same recruitment increased by 18 from 2.9-1 (30/87) last year, and the competition rate rose to 3.5-1. At Ulsan University, 13 applicants rose from 3.1 to 1 (10/31) to 4.4 to 1 (10/44), resulting in a higher competition rate. On the other hand, Yonsei University’s competition rate fell from 4.57 to 1 (23/105) last year to 4.04 to 1 (28/113) this year. Although the number of applicants increased by eight, the overall competition rate declined as the number of recruits increased by five.

-Gagun Gangwon University 5.68 to 1’Best’.. Chonnam National University 2.83 to 1

This year, 17 medical schools were recruited by Gagun on a regular basis. Kangwon University, which abolished medical staff in 2023 and converted it to medical school, joined a new university, increasing one university from last year. The average household competition rate was 3.8 to 1 (710 people / 2668 people), down from 3.9 to 1 (621 people / 2423 people) last year.

In the case of families, it is a characteristic that many universities that operate the regional talent screening are included. Gyeongsang National University Doang University Chonbuk National University Chungnam National University Chosun University Chonnam National University 6 colleges and universities run 2 screenings for general/local talent. In the case of Ewha Womans University, the selection is divided into humanities/nature. The remaining 10 schools operate a single screening.

The medical school that recorded the highest competition rate in the family appeared in Gangwon-do. 108 people applied for 19 recruitment, recording a 5.68-1 competition rate. As a result, Kyung Hee University, which ranked first in the household competition rate for two consecutive years, has been pushed back to second place. At Kyunghee University, 187 people applied to recruit 34 people, showing a 5.5-1 competition rate. This is a decrease from 6.45 to 1 last year (33/213).

Following Kyung Hee University, Dong-A University recorded a high competition rate of 4.9 to 1 on average for general/local talents with 5.33 to 1 for general (18/95) and 4.5 to 1 for local talent (10/45). For general, the competition rate fell from 7-1 (9/63) last year, but the number of recruits decreased by 6 from last year’s 3.81-1 (16/61) in local talent, and the competition rate rose.

Ewha Womans University SAT (Humanities) recorded the highest competition rate at 5.83-1 on the basis of single admission. This is the result of 35 applicants gathering for 6 recruitment. Next, Kangwon University (SAT general) 5.69 to 1 (19 students/108 students) Kyunghee University (SAT 100) 5.5 to 1 (34 students/187 students) Dong-A University (General students) 5.33 to 1 (9 students/48 students) Gyeongsang University (General) 5.28 to 1 (18/95) Konyang University (general student A) 4.66 to 1 (26/121) Dong-A University (locally balanced talent) 4.5 to 1 (10/45) Chonbuk University (local talent) 4.41 to 1 (29/128) Gyeongsang National University (local talent) 4.35 to 1 (17/74) Chosun University (general) 3.97 to 1 (60/238) Chung-Ang University (SAT general) 3.85 to 1 (40/154) ) Yonsei University (future) (general) 3.81 to 1 (47/179) Seoul National University (general) 3.63 to 1 (30/109) Busan National University (SAT) 3.33 to 1 (36/120) Chungnam National University (local talent) )3.3 to 1 (27/89) Chonbuk National University (general students) 3.23 to 1 (34/112) Chosun University (local talent) 3.26 to 1 (23/75) Chungnam University (general) 3.21 to 1 (28) Persons/90 students) Inje University (general students) 3.02 to 1 (54 students/163 students) Ewha Womans University (SAT (nature)) 3 to 1 (55 students/165 students) Kyungpook National University (general students) 2.94 to 1 (36 students) 106) Chonnam National University (local talent) 2.88 to 1 (17/49) Chonnam National University (general) 2.81 to 1 (37/104) Ajou University (general admission 1) 4.11 to 1 (18/74) It showed a high competition rate.

-Nagun Chungbuk National University 9.3 to 1’best’.. Catholic University 3.5 to 1’lowest’

There are 12 medical schools in Nagun this year that regularly recruited. There are no additional changes after Chungbuk National University, which conducted the 2018 family selection, moved. As Chungbuk National University started selecting local talents in 2019, it is the only one operating two screenings.

My competition rate was 5.5-1, higher than last year. This is the result of 1908 applicants applying for 346 recruitment. Chungbuk National University, which selects both general and regional talents, has a combined average of 9.3 to 1 in general and regional, ranking the highest competitive rate since last year. This is the result of 270 applicants applying for 29 recruitment. In general, the number of applicants decreased by 7 and the number of applicants decreased to 10.68 to 1, the same as in 11.05 to 1 last year (19/210). The competition rate rose to 1 (10/67).

After Chungbuk National University, Wonkwang University and Yeungnam University followed. Yeonggwang University recorded a competition rate of 8.39-1 with 235 applicants applying for 28 recruits. The number of recruits was reduced by 4 from 8.38 last year, and the number of applicants was also reduced by 33, showing no significant change compared to the previous year. Yeungnam University’s competition rate rose from 6.46 to 1 (35/226) last year to 7.03 to 1 (35/246) this year. This is the result of an increase of 20 applicants for the same number of recruits.

Following Yeungnam University, Eulji University (General) 7-1 (32/224) Gachon University (General I) 6-1 (15/90) Hallym University (General) 5.24-1 (38/199) Sungkyunkwan University (General) )4.47 to 1 (19 students/85 students) Ulsan University (general) 4.4 to 1 (10 students/44 students) Yonsei University (general) 4.06 to 1 (28 students/113 students) Korea University (general) 3.85 to 1 (20 students/ 77) Hanyang University (General) 3.55 to 1 (62/220)
The Catholic University (general) 3.5-1 (30/105 students) showed the highest competition rate.

The lowest in the competition rate of Nagun is Catholic University for the third consecutive year. The Catholic University recruited 105 people to recruit 30 people, recording a 3.5-1 competition rate. However, it has risen from 2.9-1 last year. This is the effect of an increase of 28 applicants for the same number of recruits.

-Multi-gun Inha University 25.67 to 1’best’.. Keimyung University 9.33 to 1’lowest’

Dagun was recruited by nine universities in the same manner as last year on time this year. Catholic Kwandong University operates two screenings, categorizing humanities and nature. Jeju National University is the only country in Dagun to select local talent with the general public. The rest of the universities are single admissions. The average competition rate of the nine universities is 14.6 to 1, which is generally higher than that of Ga/Na. 2869 people applied for the recruitment of 196 people. It is an increase from 13.3 to 1 last year (263/3494). Although the number of applicants decreased by 625, the number of recruitment also decreased by 67, and the overall competition rate rose. By university, competition rate at Inha University, Sooncheonhyang University, Dongguk University (Gyeongju), Jeju University, Kosin University, Dankook University, and Keimyung University, fell, while the competition rate declined at the Catholic Kwandong University and Daegu Catholic University.

Regardless of whether the competition rate rises or falls, the multi-group competition rate is higher than that of Ga/Na-gun because of the current recruitment group structure. Da-gun tends to have a relatively high competitive rate because there are fewer universities in the recruitment than family and na-guns. In particular, the highest-ranking natural science students who did not apply for medical school in Ga/Na-gun do not have many other options other than Chung-Ang University, Chi-Dang University/ Oriental Medical University. Therefore, the competition rate of multi-gun medical schools is inevitably higher than that of Ga/Na-gun.

Inha University won the highest competition this year. 231 applicants flocked to the 9 recruitment, recording an overwhelming competition rate of 25.67-1. Compared to last year’s 25.22-1 (9/227), the number of applicants for the same recruitment increased by 4, increasing the competition rate. Following Inha University, Soonchunhyang University recruited 38 people and 718 applied, recording a competition rate of 18.89:1. This is higher than last year’s 17.03-1 (39/664). Compared to last year, the number of recruits decreased by one, but the number of applicants increased by 54. Subsequently, Dongguk University (Gyeongju) formed the top 3 in multi-guns with 16.05-1. 305 people applied for 19 recruitment, recording a 16.05-1 competition rate.

Following Dongguk University (Gyeongju), Catholic Kwandong University was followed by a combined average of 13.52 to 1 in nature and humanities. In particular, in the humanities sector, 77 applicants flocked to the 3 recruitment, recording an overwhelming competition rate of 25.67:1. Nature also showed a high competition rate of 10.94 to 1, with 153 applicants applying for 14 recruits. Jeju National University 11.55 to 1 (28 students/335 students) Kosin University (general) 13.38 to 1 (29 students/388 students) Daegu Catholic University (general) 12.52 to 1 (27 students/338 students) Dankook University (General students (SAT)) 11.84 units 1 (25 / 296) Keimyung University (General) 9.33 to 1 (3 / 28) Korea University (General) 3.85 to 1 (20 / 77) Hanyang University (General) 3.55 to 1 (62 / 220) The Catholic University (general) 3.5 to 1 (30/105 students) ranked high in competition. Jeju National University is a figure showing the average competition rate of 14.55 to 1 general (20 / 291) and 4.89 to 1 (9 / 44) of local talent.

<지역인재 경쟁률 4.02대1 '상승' 충북대 6.7대1 '최고'>

Although it is widely operated at any time, the competition rate slightly increased for local talents who do not have many universities on time. The number of universities that conducted on-time local talent this year are the same eight universities as last year. The competition rate for regional talent selection at 8 universities is 4.02 to 1 (142 / 571). Last year, it ended at 3.49 to 1 (166/580).

Chungbuk National University showed the highest competition rate among local talented universities. 67 people applied for 10 recruitment, recording a 6.7 to 1 competition rate. Compared to last year’s 6-1 (11/66), the number of recruits has decreased by one, and the number of applicants has increased by one, and the competition rate has risen. Next, Jeju University 4.89 to 1 (9/44) Dong-A University 4.5 to 1 (10/45) Chonbuk National University 4.41 to 1 (29/128) Gyeongsang National University 4.35 to 1 (17/74) Chungnam National University about 3.3 to 1 (27/89) Chosun University 3.26-1 (23/75) Chonnam National University 2.89-1 (17/49).

The Regional Talent Screening is a screening program designed for balanced regional development by resolving the concentration of local high school graduates in the metropolitan area based on the’Act on Fostering Local University and Regional Balanced Talents’. It was newly established in 2014, and the proportion of college admissions is increasing recently. It has expanded to 5 schools in 2016, 6 schools in 2017, 5 schools in 2018, and 8 schools in 2019. This year, following the 2020 school year, the overall selection scale was maintained similar to that of the 2019 school year. The education community emphasizes the need to expand local talent on time. This is because the regional talent screening can play a sufficient role in the balanced development of local universities and regions.

There is also a demand to allow overlapping support for regional talent selection by adjusting the recruitment group. Among the eight universities that are recruiting local talent this year, Chungnam National University and Chungcheongbuk-do (Daejeon/Chungnam/Chungbuk/Sejong), Gyeongsang National University and Dong-A University Boulgyeong (Busan/Ulsan/Gyeongnam), Chonnam National University Gwangju/Jeonnam/Jeonbuk, Chonbuk National University Jeonbuk, Chosun University Gwangju/ Each student from Jeonnam and Jeju National University is granted application qualifications. Among them, Gyeongsang National University, Dong-A University, Chonnam University, Chonbuk National University, Chosun University, all of which have overlapping qualifications, are all recruiting family members, so candidates have to select only one university.

You have to judge the suitability by considering the method of reflecting the SAT and the indicators.

-10 interviews conducted.. Most judges disqualified

There are a small number of 10 medical schools that conduct interviews. There was a trend of increasing medical schools with new interviews, but this year Chosun University and Chungbuk University abolished interviews and Ajou University reduced the weight of interviews. The reason why the importance of interviews is emphasized in medical school is that there is a need to evaluate the minimum personality that must be possessed as a doctor at the time of selecting with quantified scores. During the entrance examination process, voices of concern are constantly raised over whether it is desirable to select only grades without a personality evaluation. Recently, as a result of an analysis of the admissions screening for 2021-year national medical schools, 1527 (50.4%) out of 3029 pre-medical students were selected only with grades without evaluation of their personalities as doctors during the entrance examination process.

The universities conducting interviews this year are Dong-A University Seoul National University Ajou University Inje University, Nagun Catholic University Korea University Sungkyunkwan University Yonsei University Ulsan University, and Dagun Catholic Kwandong University. Last year, the interviewee was not conducted at Inje University.

Most interviews are not reflected in the evaluation weight and are used only to determine whether or not they are disqualified. The only place that reflects it at a certain rate is the family of the family. Ajou University reflected 20% of the interviews until last year, but the proportion has decreased to 5% this year.

Looking at the interview types for each university, Seoul National University, the most preferred university, proceeds with one interview room to check the aptitude/personality and the contents of the submitted documents. Multiple interviewers are conducted for one applicant. It evaluates the qualities, aptitude, and personality necessary to major in medicine, and English can be used in the presentation. Interview time is around 20 minutes, and a separate time can be given to familiarize yourself with the situation.

Ulsan University’s Inje University is a multi-mini interview that is held in several interview rooms using the presentation. Ulsan University takes about 30 minutes per person and evaluates the qualities and personality/aptitude necessary to major in medicine. It presents a variety of situations, and English can be used in related presentations. There are a total of 3 interview rooms, and each room takes about 10 minutes.

Inje University, which opened this year’s interview, also has a total of three interview rooms, and each room conducts 10 minutes interview for a total of 30 minutes. Outside the interview room, read the statements and questions for 2 minutes, prepare answers, and conduct the interview for 8 minutes in the interview room. Evaluate the personality of a student who has the potential to grow into a good doctor.

The multi-mini interview is an interview method that is in the spotlight in recent medical school selections. It is a unique structure in which small-scale interviews are continued, rather than one-off interviews conducted in one existing interview room. The time required is longer than that of a general interview. If the general interview is short, it takes about 10 minutes, whereas the multi-mini interview is conducted sequentially through several interview rooms called’rooms’, so depending on the number of interview rooms, it may take longer than an hour.

One of the types of interviews commonly used in multiple mini-interviews is’situation presentation’. This is a case of asking why this situation happened after presenting a specific situation, and how to solve this situation if it hits the applicant. The form of’presentation analysis’, which provides a certain amount of time to read and think about the proposal and provides an interview, is also frequently used.

Multi-mini interviews are mainly used for occasional interviews, but sometimes they are used on time. Points have been steadily raised that a device for verifying personality is needed in medical school entrance examinations. This is because medical school is a place that trains preliminary doctors who take direct contact with patients and deal with a person’s life, and therefore requires a higher ethical awareness than other majors.

-Reflecting the subject, Hanyang University’s only.. Not reflecting the deduction factor of the Seoul National University Student Department

Hanyang University is the only one that reflects the student department. 10% of the subject is reflected. The top three subjects of Korean mathematics, English science, and science are reflected until the second semester of the third year. It is calculated by dividing the sum of the grade points for each subject by the total number of subjects.

Seoul National University will not use the Student Affairs Department on time this year. Previously, if all the attendance and service course completion criteria were not met in the regular regular screening, points were deducted from the SAT score, but this year, it is not applied in consideration of the aftermath of Corona 19. SNU admissions official explained, “SNU is aware that the school’s overall educational activities, such as creative experience activities as well as classes based on active participation of students, are not being smoothly carried out.”

Of the 38 medical schools, 10 are interviewed. The remaining 28 schools have no additional admission schedule. It is necessary to pay attention to the schedule of each college exam. Interviews at Dong-A University and Seoul National University are the same on the 16th. The Catholic University, Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, and Ulsan University also held the same interview on the 23rd.

There may be variables such as early announcement, but based on the application guidelines, Gachon University announces the candidates as early as the 21st at the time of this year’s medical school. Kyunghee University also announced the successful candidates on the 22nd, which is relatively fast. The place where successful candidates are announced within January is Jeonbuk National University Dankook University (26th) Inje University (27th) Konyang University Chosun University Keimyung University (29th).

The rest of the universities will announce successful candidates next month. Ewha Womans University February 1, Chonnam National University Pusan National University February 3, Ajou University Yonsei University (future) Chungnam National University Ulsan University Hallym University February 4, Gangwon University Dong-a University Seoul National University Catholic University Hanyang University Catholic Kwandong University Daegu Catholic University February 5, Kyungpook National University Gyeongsang National University Korea University Sungkyunkwan University Yonsei University Yeungnam University Wonkwang University Eulji University Dongguk University (Gyeongju) Sooncheonhyang University Inha University Jeju National University announces the successful candidates on February 7.
