LG Display LED War Pomun Mini LED is just an LCD

LG Display, which unveiled the next generation OLED panel, aimed at Samsung Electronics’ recently introduced mini LED TV’Neo QLED’ as “not a new technology, but a liquid crystal display (LCD)”.
LG Display unveiled the CES 2021 exhibition hall that opened at LG Science Park in Gangseo-gu, Seoul on the 11th.
This year, LG Display introduced a 77-inch next-generation OLED TV panel that applied high-efficiency organic materials and added a light-emitting layer to improve luminous efficiency by about 20% compared to the previous one, and a case where transparent OLED technology was applied. In addition, they exhibited 88-inch 8K CSO (Cinematic Sound OLED) products in which the OLED panel itself vibrates through the home theater and game zone and makes sound directly, and a 48-inch bendable OLED TV.
Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Executive Director Soo-Young Yoon explained, “It is often called mini LED, but we don’t see mini LED as a new technology. It is a technology that improves the backlight in LCD.” “It is impossible to achieve perfect black, and there are limitations as LCD such as light leakage and screen flicker, so OLED has no choice but to have a competitive edge.”

Managing Director Yoon also said about micro LED TVs, “Both micro LED and OLED are self-luminous technology, so they can achieve the same picture quality, but the price will not be easy.” As for the technology, OLED is the only one.”
This remark can be interpreted as aiming at Samsung Electronics’ recent introduction of’Neo QLED’, a TV with mini LED applied. In addition, Samsung Electronics set a shipping price of 170 million won when it introduced a new 110-type micro LED TV, a next-generation display technology, last month.
In addition, Managing Director Yun revealed plans to strengthen the rollable and transparent display business. He explained, “The size of the transparent display market is gradually growing,” and “I think there is a demand from more commercial and industrial companies.”
In addition, LG Display plans to expand its differentiated competitiveness and market dominance in the premium TV market by mass-producing 83-inch and 42-inch OLED TV panels in addition to the existing 88, 77, 65, 55, 48 inches from this year. In addition, it plans to expand the area by significantly expanding the mid-size lineup in the 20-30 inch range.
Meanwhile, this year’s CES 2021 LG Display exhibition hall can be viewed online through the company website.
