Chairman Chung Mong-gyu (59) has been selected as the president of the Korea Football Association.

The Korea Football Association announced on the 7th that “Chairman Chung, who applied for the election for the 54th Korea Football Association president, has been decided as the final elect.”

Chairman Chung was a sole candidate for the candidate registration for the 54th presidential election, which ended on the 23rd of last month. Article 23 of the Association’s Articles of Incorporation states,’If there is only one candidate, the Election Commission will examine the reasons for disqualification of the officer and, if there is no defect, the election will be decided.’ Chairman Chung did not hold the election scheduled on the 6th, but went through a review by the election committee and became the president-elect.

Chairman Chung, who was suspended from office due to running for election, returned to the position of president from the 7th. Chairman Chung will be officially inaugurated on the 27th after approval by the Korean Sports Association and will serve for the third term. The term of office is until January 2025.

Chairman Chung, who is also chairman of HDC (Hyundai Industrial Development) and owner of K League 2 Busan I-Park, entered the football world in 1994 as the owner of Hyundai K-League 1 Ulsan, and has served as the president of the Korea Professional Football Federation since 2011. In January 2013, Chairman Chung, who was first elected to the position of president through a contest in the 52nd presidential election of the Football Association, succeeded in unanimous elections in the 53rd presidential election held in July 2016.

Chairman Chung said on this day, “The situation in 2021 does not seem easy due to Corona 19. The FIFA U-20 World Cup and the U-17 World Cup, which were scheduled to be held this year, were canceled. International competitions, including the 2022 Qatar World Cup Asian Qualifiers and the Olympics, cannot be guaranteed. In a situation where I have to go through the fog, I take on the position of president of the Football Association, which is more burdensome than ever, but on the other hand, I feel a great sense of duty.”

Chairman Chung said, “The Football Association recently announced a new brand identity and put forward’fear-free advance’ as its core value. I think we need the strength to confront and fight rather than hesitate to face the crisis. I will continue to try and challenge new things and lead Korean football.”

In addition, Chairman Chung said, “Through two tenures, we have been striving to build a new solid foundation for Korean football for 8 years. The long-term initiatives such as the expansion of infrastructure including the Korean division system and the Cheonan Football Comprehensive Center are now yielding tangible results. “We will end the hundred years of Korean football during our new term of office for four years. In particular, we will create an environment where football dreamers can learn soccer without worrying about costs and enjoy soccer anytime, anywhere. Through soccer,’dream, enjoy and enjoy’ through soccer. “I will try to establish a culture of sharing,” he said.
