President-elect Trump supporters, who had previously gathered in Washington from all over the country, broke into Congress, where a joint Senate-House meeting was held to confirm the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.
The meeting was halted when protesters disagreeing with the results of the presidential election illegally occupied the parliament, which is a’symbol of democracy’. Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the meeting, was escorted by the Secret Service and rushed out of the Senate building.
Local police said they had arrested 52 people for intruding into the Capitol. 47 were arrested for violating the 6 p.m. curfew introduced by Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, and 26 were arrested on the grounds of the Capitol. Some have been arrested for possessing unauthorized or prohibited firearms.
In addition, the police found and recovered a pipe bomb in the headquarters buildings of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Republican National Committee (RNC) near the Capitol, and a refrigerator containing Molotov cocktails from a vehicle in the Capitol.
