The New York Stock Exchange, which decided to delist China’s three major telecommunications companies and withdrew them, eventually turned back to delisting.
The New York Stock Exchange announced on the 6th local time that it would delist three companies, including China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, on the New York Stock Exchange.
The New York Stock Exchange announced on the 31st of last month that these three major Chinese telecommunications companies will be delisted, but after an additional consultation on the 4th of this month, four days later, it said that it will not delist, but this time it reversed.
The New York Stock Exchange explained that it has again reversed its decision to comply with new guidelines from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control.
The new directive says Americans will not be able to engage in certain transactions with these three major Chinese carriers starting on the 11th.
This is a follow-up to President Donald Trump’s executive order banning American investment in Chinese military-affiliated businesses in November.
Prior to President Trump’s executive order, the U.S. Department of Defense listed these three state-owned telecommunications companies on a list of companies affiliated with the Chinese military.
The New York Stock Exchange has officially heard the US Treasury Department’s Office of Overseas Asset Control’s change in guidelines, but the reversal is due to pressure from the Trump administration, including Treasury Secretary Stephen Manusin, Bloomberg reported.
According to reports, Secretary Manusin called Stacy Cunningham, chief executive officer of the New York Stock Exchange, and expressed his opposition to the reversal of the original decision to delist three companies: China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom.
Bloomberg added that the US administration’s response was also involved in White House Secretary Mark Meadows, National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien and White House National Economic Commissioner Larry Kurdlow.
