LG Electronics unveils a rollable smartphone with a rolled up display at the world’s largest consumer electronics and IT exhibition’CES 2021′, which will be held from the 11th.
According to the electronics industry on the 6th, LG Electronics will introduce a rollable smartphone’LG Rollable (tentative name)’ at CES 2021.
Earlier, LG Electronics released the’LG Wing’, which rotates the screen horizontally last year, and released a product teaser video that is supposed to be a rollable phone. At the time, the teaser video contained the side view of the screen coming out and entering like a drawer.
According to an electronics industry official, a teaser video with more real images is expected to be released at CES 2021. Rollable phones will not be exhibited at the online exhibition hall separately operated from the LG Electronics site.
■ LG rollable, CPI cover window applied to 7.4 inches when unfolded
According to the emulator for the LG rollable smartphone released on the Android developer site, the LG rollable phone is 6.8 inches in size and has an aspect ratio of 1080×2428 before opening the screen, and when it is expanded, it has a 1600×2428 aspect ratio in a size of 7.4 inches. The screen has a structure in which the right part extends horizontally.
The product is expected to be released within the first half of this year, and it is expected to become the world’s first commercialized rollable smartphone. It was predicted that the LG rollable phone will be released in March as early as this year, but according to industry officials, mass production is delayed and the possibility of launching in June is raised.
It is known that the LG Rollable Display will use a transparent polyimide film (CPI) made of plastic. Using ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG) can make a cover window with less wrinkles than CPI, strong against scratches and better touch sensitivity, but it is known that it is difficult to apply UTG to rollable smartphones yet. Samsung Electronics used CPI for its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, and UTG, for its successor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
An industry official said, “Rollable phones are easy for people to carry and drop due to the nature of smartphones, but UTG is fragile, so it is still difficult to use a rollable phone.”
