43% of orders received High value-added shipbuilding orders in the second half of the year, surpassing China

The Korean shipbuilding industry surpassed China for the third consecutive year and achieved the world’s No. 1 shipbuilding order.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 5th, Clarkson Research, an analysis agency for shipbuilding and shipping in the UK, compiled the results of ship orders by country last year, and out of the 19.24 million CGT ship orders in the world, Korea won 81.9 million CGT (42.6%). Ranked first.
Accordingly, the Korean shipbuilding industry maintained the world’s No. 1 position in order performance for three consecutive years after beating China in seven years in 2018.
The Korean shipbuilder’s order performance in the first half of last year was 1.35 million CGT, behind China (408 CGT), but in the second half of the year, it drove 6.84 million CGT to win orders, surpassing China, which only reached 3.85 million CGT.
In particular, in December of last year, it showed a high competitive advantage in high value-added ships.
Large LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers (174k㎥ or more) 21 out of 21 (100%), ultra-large crude oil carriers (VLCC, 200,000 DWT or more) 6 out of 6, large container ships (10,000) Over 2,000 TEU), 10 out of 16 (62.5%) were swept by Korea.
An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “Even in the situation where global orders are sluggish due to increased uncertainty due to the spread of Corona 19, we have achieved achievements with the technology and quality demonstrated by our industry in high value-added ship types such as LNG carriers, ultra-large container ships, and VLCCs.”
He said, “We will continue to provide support for securing future competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry, such as autonomous ships, eco-friendly ships, and smart Korean yards, so that our shipbuilders can maintain leadership in the future market in response to paradigm changes such as eco-friendliness and smartization.”
In Clarkson’s total, China (79,330,000 CGT) took second place in orders last year. Japan was in third place (1.37 million CGT) and Russia was in fourth place (950,000 CGT).
Clarkson predicts that this year’s global ship orders will reach 23.8 million CGT, up 23.7% from last year.
By ship type, orders for LNG carriers of 3.2 million CGT and container ships of 6.3 million CGT are expected to come out.
