Last year, the size of Korean shipbuilding orders surpassed China and ranked first in the world.

On the 5th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reported that Korea ranked first in the world by winning 81.9 million CGT orders out of 19.24 million CGT in world ship orders as a result of the ‘2020 Shipbuilding Order Performance by Country’ surveyed by Clarkson Research, a shipbuilding and shipping analysis agency in the UK. Revealed.

The Republic of Korea was sluggish in the first half of 2020, but intensively won orders in the second half of 2020, surpassing China to become the world’s first. In the first half of the year, China’s orders were 4.84 million CGT, more than Korea, which stayed at 1.35 million CGT, but in the second half of the year, Korea won 6.84 million CGT, while China was only 3.85 million CGT.

In particular, in December of last year, it won orders for 21 large LNG carriers (174,000㎥ or more) and 6 VLCC (super-large tankers with 200,000 DWT or more). In addition, it showed competitive advantage in high value-added ship types by winning orders for 10 (62.5%) out of 16 large container ships (over 12,000 TEU).

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “Achievement achieved with the technology and quality demonstrated by our industry in the field of high-value-added ships such as LNG carriers, ultra-large container ships, and VLCCs in a situation where global orders are sluggish due to increased uncertainty due to the spread of Corona 19.”
