U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 117th Congress on the 3rd (local time). Pelosi, who was the first woman to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2007, began her fourth term. The chairman of the House of Representatives is the second place in the succession to the vice president when the president is not given.

According to foreign media such as AFP, Chairman Pelosi, a member of the Democratic Party, was elected after receiving 216 votes in favor at the plenary session of the House of Representatives. House Representative Kevin McCarthy of the Republican Party received 209 votes. The difference was not large because the Democratic Party lost 11 seats in the November election last year, and the House of Representatives consisted of 222 Democrats and 212 Republicans.

The Democratic Party came out with five exit votes. Two voted for non-running lawmakers, and the other three voted “incumbent” to convey opposition to Chairman Pelosi, who aimed for the fourth term of office following 110, 111 and 116. Pelosi, aged 80 this year, is the first and only female Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Chairman Pelosi, along with President-elect Joe Biden, is expected to focus on overcoming Corona 19, reforming medical services, and expanding infrastructure in the new Congress. The five-day runoff vote in two Georgian constituencies will determine the majority of the Senate, which will have a major impact on how well Pelosi and Biden-elect will achieve.

After being re-elected on the same day, Chairman Pelosi delivered a speech after being re-elected that day, saying, “With the oath of office today, we accept the difficult and burdensome responsibility faced by previous generation leadership. Our most pressing priority is the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19 ),” he stressed.

Chairman Pelosi and Biden-elect said they will pursue additional corona 19 stimulus over the next few weeks. They said that about $900 billion (about 974 trillion won) of economic stimulus bill passed by Congress at the end of last month was a down payment. Chairman Pelosi called for assistance to state and local governments on this day.
