As of the end of last year, the number of residents registered in Korea was 58,290,023, which was 2,838 fewer than the previous year. This is the first decline since the count of the resident registration population. According to the ‘2020 Resident Registration Demographics’ released by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security on the 3rd, the number of births last year was 275,815, the lowest ever, 30,000 fewer than the deaths (30,7764). This is the first time this year has seen a phenomenon of’population dead cross’, in which the population naturally decreases with more deaths than births. In 2017 (36,2867), the number of births fell from 300,000 to 200,000 in three years.

By age, the population increased only in the 60s or older. Last year, the population in their 60s was 674,506, an increase of 6.9 percent (43,3855) from the previous year. The population over 70 also increased by 4.0% in one year. However, those under the age of 9 decreased by 4.7%, while those in their teens decreased by 3.3% and those in their 30s by 2.8%. The proportion of the population was in their 50s, accounting for 16.7% of the total. Then, 16.0% were in their 40s and 13.3% were in their 30s. The proportion of the population over 60 is 24.0%. Compared to 2011 (15.8%) nine years ago, it increased by 8.2 percentage points. The proportion of Koreans who passed the sixtieth birthday has soared from one in seven to one in four.

By generation, the proportion of single-person households has increased significantly. Last year, the number of single-person households was 9,033,32, an increase of nearly 600,000 from the previous year, accounting for 39.2% of the total. Two-person households followed with 23.4%. On the other hand, the proportion of households with 3 and 4 people were only 17.4% and 20.0%, respectively, and the average number of household members per household was 2.24. By city and province, the population of Gyeonggi-do was the largest with 13,270,014. Following this, Seoul City (9668465 people), Busan City (3391946 people), and Gyeongnam Province (334,216 people). Compared to the previous year, the population of 12 cities and provinces decreased, excluding 5 places including Gyeonggi, Sejong, Jeju, Gangwon, and Chungbuk. The Ministry of Public Administration and Security said, “The number of people in their 40s decreased and those in their 60s increased, leading to a deepening of the low birthrate and aging population. It was only a place, and it appeared that we should be prepared for fat loss.”
