[아시아경제 나한아 기자] The’garbage mountain’ of Uiseong-gun, Gyeongbuk, which was disgraced internationally, disappeared during this month as the use of plastic in Korea and problems were intensively reported on CNN in the past.
On the 2nd, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, “In this month, the first month of the new year, we will remove all garbage piles consisting of 192,000 tons of garbage.”
Earlier, in March 2019, according to a report by CNN, in a rural village in Danmil-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, there was a’garbage mountain’ in the form of a towering tower of about 15 meters, piled up with waste and other garbage. The garbage mountain is made up of all kinds of garbage such as plastic, styrofoam, electric wire, vinyl, and scrap metal.
This garbage pile was created by the unauthorized neglect of the owners of Company A, which operates a waste disposal company, and from June 2016 to July 2018, they received permission several times across the country, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gyeongbuk, and Chungnam. 2157 tons) of waste, 90 times the amount of waste, etc., were brought into the site without countermeasures and left unattended.
As a result, the county issued administrative dispositions to business owner A several times and revoked the permit for intermediate recycling business, but the waste was piled up as it was. Each time the company objected to the disposition, initiated an administrative lawsuit, suspended execution, and used the period to bring in waste, which further increased the amount of neglect, explained Uiseong-gun.
Garbage accumulated on the site of a 40,000㎡ business site not only interfered with the daily life of nearby residents, but also caused a fire due to the pressure generated by the accumulation of garbage and did not extinguish for several days.
Eventually, Uiseong-gun began to dispose of garbage through administrative agency execution with the help of the Ministry of Environment, and the prosecution investigation of the A-owner continued. Business owners who neglected a pile of trash were treated by law.
Kwon Hyun-soo, the person in charge of the environment department in Uiseong-gun, said, “We plan to create an’eco-green experience center’ on the spot once we clear the garbage mountain.” It is planned.”
From June 2019, Uiseong-gun began to clean up garbage piles by spending 24 billion won, including government, do, and armament, as an administrative agency. Currently, about 187,000 tons (97%) of garbage has been sorted out.
