Ministry of Environment completes the construction of a hydrogen filling station for the first piping supply in Korea

On December 30, the Ministry of Environment (Minister Cho Joong-rae) held a ceremony for the completion of the’Ulsan Together Hydrogen Charging Station’ in Nam-gu, Ulsan City, where hydrogen is supplied through a pipe for the first time in Korea.

The Ulsan Together Hydrogen Charging Station is the first domestic case in which hydrogen is supplied by connecting a 1.3km-long pipe from a hydrogen production plant and is the third by world standards. The charging capacity is 770kg per day (55kg/h, 14 hours operation), and 130 hydrogen cars can be charged per day, which is expected to greatly improve the convenience of hydrogen car users in Ulsan.

In addition, according to the Ulsan City Hydrogen Pipe Network Construction Plan, if hydrogen pipes are constructed in the city center with a total length of 63km by 2030, it is expected that hydrogen charging stations of the pipeline transfer method will be provided throughout the city.

By transferring large amounts of hydrogen, which has been supplied by large vehicles such as tube trailers, through pipes, vehicle transportation costs are reduced, and parking spaces for large vehicles are not required, making it possible to build charging stations on narrow sites.

Meanwhile, according to the Green New Deal promotion plan, the Ministry of Environment is planning to build a total of 310 charging stations, including 250 in the city center and 60 on the highway, so that hydrogen car operators will not have any inconvenience in charging.

To this end, we are pursuing a plan to focus on competency between related ministries through the’Training Unit for Hydrogen Recharging Stations (T/F) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ and introduce a special case for permission to build a charging station for quick approval and approval.

It is also revising customary laws to expand the location of hydrogen charging stations, such as improving the restrictions that allowed only the owners of existing sites in the green belt to install hydrogen charging stations. In addition, the Ministry of Environment will support hydrogen fuel purchase costs from 2021 to resolve the chronic operating deficit and induce active participation from the private sector.
