The first study found that the UK-born Corona 19 mutant virus does not appear to cause more serious symptoms than the existing virus.
The UK Department of Public Health (PHE) conducted a follow-up study comparing 1,769 infected people of’B.1.1.7′, a corona 19 mutant virus that has recently spread rapidly in their country, with the same number of existing corona 19 virus infections. One result was released on the 29th (local time).
The research team matched the two groups on a one-to-one basis by age, sex, place of residence, and diagnosis. As a result, out of a total of 42 patients hospitalized due to severe corona 19 deterioration, 16 were infected with B.1.1.7. There were 10 patients (0.9%), but 26 (1.5%) were infected with the existing virus.
The fatality rate was slightly higher in the B.1.1.7 infected patients, but was not statistically significant. Of the 22 people who died within 4 weeks after diagnosis, 12 (0.89%) were infected with B.1.1.7 and 10 (0.73%) were infected with the existing virus.
In both groups, 2 cases of mutant virus and 3 cases of existing virus were reinfected 90 days after the first infection.
There was no significant difference in mortality, but it was reconfirmed that the mutant virus is stronger in spreading power.
According to the results of PHE’s analysis of National Health Service (NHS) data, the probability of infection of people who are in close contact with the corona19 infected person is estimated to be 15% if the person infected with the mutant virus and 10% if the person infected with the existing virus. .
“It shows that the new mutant virus does not cause more serious disease or increases the mortality rate, but we are continuing to investigate to better understand the mutant virus,” the researchers said.
Corona 19 mutant virus originating in the UK has been confirmed in at least 17 countries, including Korea and the United States, in addition to the UK. As of the morning of the 30th, the number of infected mutant viruses from the UK increased to 5 in total.
