Changes in global AP market share in the third quarter of this year compared to the same period last year 〈Counterpoint Research〉
Taiwan MediaTek surpassed Qualcomm and ranked first in the global application processor (AP) market in the third quarter. Among major AP companies, Samsung Electronics’ share fell the most compared to the same period last year. AP is a core chipset that acts as the brain of a smartphone.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 25th, MediaTek took the first place in history with 31% of the AP market in the third quarter of this year. Its market share increased by 5 percentage points over the same period last year. Counterpoint Research said, “Mediatek has grown to become the largest supplier of smartphone chipsets in the low-cost (100-$250) smartphone market and regions such as China, India, and Latin America.” “The inexpensive MediaTek chipset produced by TSMC was the first option for smartphone makers to quickly fill the gap caused by Huawei’s absence.”
Qualcomm fell to the second place with 29%, down 2 percentage points from the same period last year. However, in terms of 5G smartphones alone, it led the market with 39% of the market share. Counterpoint Research predicted, “It is estimated that a third of smartphones released in the fourth quarter supported 5G.”
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics’ market share fell 4 percentage points from the same period last year, reaching only 12%, the same as Hi Silicon and Apple. During the same period, Apple increased by 1 percentage point, and Hi Silicon remained unchanged.
