[스포티비뉴스=김현록 기자]I was about to die, but the world fell first. Monsters that don’t die even when killed have become a raging hell. Unlike the sweet title, Netflix’s original’Sweet Home’ depicts such a survival period in hell. The main character was a high school student who had lost his family and was secluded, and the residents of the apartment green homes had an urgent struggle for survival with the monster before the demolition.
When the popular webtoon of the same name was made into a drama, the most surprising thing was that the director was director Lee Eung-bok. He was accepted as a star PD representing the Korean Wave and an expert in sweet love stories, who collaborated with writer Kim Eun-sook and showed megaton-level hits such as drama’Descendants of the Sun,”Goblin’ and’Mr. Sunshine’. Actually, I couldn’t see a disgusting creature, so I turned it off rather than tolerated it.
However, director Lee Eung-bok said that he decided to take a new challenge against the story of the original. Director Lee explains that even though he is dealing with monsters, it is a story of humans and creatures are also a genre that emphasizes’humanity’. Director Lee Eung-bok said that’Descendants of the Sun’ made an earthquake,’Ghost’ had a knife, and’Mr. Sunshine’ made a tragic situation. Such hardships turned into monsters in’Sweet Home’. He said this, saying.
“I can’t afford to love in’Sweet Home’, but if the monsters are a little controlled and have more space, maybe I can make love.”
-How do you feel about launching the creature’Sweet Home’? What are your good points or regrets?
“I made it without fear, but it was grim because there were people who made it pretty. The original work was great, so I wanted to try it. It was good to introduce a work method that I haven’t done before. More than 90% of the work was done on the set. Breathing with the actors. It was also good to be able to do technical experiments and CG introduction.
There are a lot of things that I was disappointed with. Starting from the original base, I thought about how to divide the difference between the genre of the original and the drama, and how to follow the expectations of the original and the breath of those who have not seen it. I think there are some parts that are a bit unfortunate to combine such parts.”
-It is not an exaggeration to say that he is a professional love story director, but he challenged a completely different monster creature.
“Thank you for acknowledging your expertise. (laughs) I think Love Story is a good subject and genre from both east and west. Creature is also a genre that contains humanity, although it is a little different. The depiction of a group of humans fighting against a hostile enemy called Creature is really I thought it was a very big catharsis, fun, and a material that could give a great impression.”Jirisan,” which we are preparing now, has the love of human groups and the love of humanity in the story that takes place in a mysterious mountain, I think it is a good device. In addition, it was fascinating that you can look at human beings even inside the creatures: In’Descendants of the Sun,’ they caused an earthquake for the love of two people,’Goblin’ with a knife, and’Mr. Sunshine’ in a tragic situation. Look, I’ve moved to a monster. I don’t have the capacity to make direct love in’Sweet Home’, but if the monster is a little controlled and has the capacity, maybe I can make love.”

-How did you make webtoons dramatized?
“The first time I came across the original was about November December of 2018’Mr. Sunshine.’ done.
Everyone will be disappointed when the original is based. I started because I liked the original. Webtoon has a thrilling feeling. Since the media are different, I decided how to distinguish between the characteristics of webtoons and dramas. When it comes to drama, how will you induce viewers’ reactions? How to melt the whole flow in less than 10 hours. In the original webtoon, the process of becoming a monster, monsters are abundantly melted, but how to melt the vast amount in the right place. Another way to make a creature appear. it’s difficult. I took care.
Specifically, I paid attention to Hyunsoo (Songgang)’s emotional line. When the world is about to lose its meaning and die, the world first perishes, there is a sense of solidarity, and then comes out of an isolated space to become one with the residents of the Green Home, and a friend who tried to choose death meaninglessly reveals his desire that he did not know. In the most highlight, the desire to live within oneself is expressed. Overall, I paid attention to that line.”

-Seo Yi-kyung, played by Lee Si-young, is a character that is not in the original. I added the setting that I am pregnant.
“It is a choice based on various pavements. A woman who has the strength of a man who is as strong as a man overcomes the situation of becoming a monster subjectively. Even though it is the strongest character, it cannot be said to be a weakness (?), but I wanted to give such an element. It is also a mysterious element. It can be called hope or despair. I also wanted to see the process of going through such mental and physical difficulties. I also thought about what would happen to my child if it was made into Season 2.”
-How far is the Season 2 discussion going? Are there any more paving stones thrown with you in mind?
“Season 2 is not yet discussed. We are now watching to see if the results of our hard work come out worthwhile. I think there is a part that can be made if it is worthwhile. Such paving stones are sparse. It is not a complete plan, and Sang-wook, who has been revived without injury. (Lee Jin-wook) and Hyun-su appear, but what happens to these things? There is a part I’m curious about when I throw it away. What it will be like is a stone that I have thrown interestingly.”
-I can feel the influence of director Bong Joon-ho’s’monster’. Are there other works that influenced you?
“Director Bong Joon-ho’s’Monster’ is a great work. I love it. I wanted to give that impression and fun. The part where the character conflict is woven is the’The Walking Dead’, and the part where the mysterious story is entangled is the classic such as’The Lost’. I saw a part of the creatures with other monsters. Some were disgusting and some were turned off as soon as I saw them.. At my level, it wasn’t showing such a disgusting thing, but because human desires changed, so what I tried to show as the original webtoon was have.”

-How did the choreographer Seoljin Kim participate?
“Sorry, I had a hard time. I was very much instructed on the movement, but I talked a lot about it from time to time. While watching the original webtoon, I dealt with the details of what kind of movement would be good, how to express desire, and even the visual expression part one by one. Munch’s After seeing the performance of the painting “Scream” in contemporary dance, I asked for a request. Although they are human, they act like a monster. The lotus root monster is actually expressive enough to not want to put on makeup. I ate one or two bananas for a few months and prepared to show the ribs while bunny tea. I think I could say that I did other creature movements myself, and that I did the whole process together.”
-You mentioned that the difficulty is the best among the works you have done so far.
“When I film a monster, I would become a monster. If I act on a monster without CG without knowing the result, this friend will smoke. It was not easy to try to complete that part. Filming stage, CG late, color correction. The character is completely changed with just a touch of detail, such as the color of the skin of the lotus root, the color of the skin on the muscles, how the monster sticks to the color, etc. The simulation process takes time as well. .”

-The setting of becoming a monster with desire would not have been easy to transfer to the video.
“It’s a state of consciousness. Rebellion within oneself. How to visualize an ideological thing that can be metaphysical. I was worried. Since the original and the medium are different, would viewers like it rather than the limitations of Youngshang? I thought about that part. This is my homework, how do I express the mental world that I think is desire? My way was to solve this mental world as a relationship, I think I did the process of bringing out the internalized fight against myself. I wanted to bring it out.”
-Is there a secret to moving the original webtoon into a video?
I’m not really sure either. How can I do the original webtoon well? A 50-minute breath that is different from what you see weekly, synchro rate when the actors know. I think these are the important parts. I tried to avoid changing the story as much as possible. The beginning was similar to the webtoon, but it was respect for the original fam. Unfortunately, what if we had developed a drama synop while the webtoon was all out? We divided the season into three and did it over three seasons. If that was the case, it would have been released only 3-4 years later. However, since the original work itself was in series, the initial composition was followed by a motif, but there was no choice but to change the back.
Many thoughts come and go, but this time I felt it. There is nothing sharp. Anyway, Korea was also a little hurried in that it would be nice to come out with creatures or works that are materially attempted. There is also a clumsy part, but I hope that it will come out as a part that will lead to the development of Korean dramas by supplementing a lot.”

-The character of Pyeon Sang-wook, played by Lee Jin-wook, differs from the original.
“People in the Green Home have different degrees of hardship when a monster strikes. Pyun Sang-wook thought,’Even if the world perishes, this one will take care of it.’ It is a story that may be different from the original, but I thought it was in line with the values and the worldview. A person who has already become a monster kills a monster and tries to abandon himself, a device that gains power through the solidarity of those who accept the monster. I set the character as. I thought it was a symbolic metaphor to endure monsterization.”

-Kim Nam-hee played an intense villain in’Mr. Sunshine’. So, did you take the role of Jeong Jae-heon, who is completely opposite this time?
“It was a very good role in’Goblin’. It was a short role, but I was impressed. So, I entrusted Takashi Mori, an unknown villain in’Mr. Sunshine’. As you may know, there was a good response. This time, it was not’Let’s reverse it. I had faith in. I auditioned rather than entrusted this friend to me. I think there is a good response because I have an image.”
-The action of the ventilator of Lee Si-young as Seo Yi-kyung is impressive.
“The vent action is a condition where you can’t do a band without a band. As you can see, it was a condition that you could not use a band, a body that could not use a band. I made a partial set and worked on it. I filmed.”
-If you are making Season 2, are there any parts you want to save from the original?
“There are good gods that I couldn’t deal with as a fan of the original. The original was in progress when I was making the script. As a fan of the original, if there are good parts, I think there are many parts to melt away. Characters, monsters, and another green home. There may be this. I think it will be reflected in Season 2 that we have not solved all.”

-Casting Song Kang, who had a strong image of a handsome actor, as the main character Cha Hyun-soo.
“Actor Song Kang was recommended by Na-jung Na-jung, a director of the work that appeared as a handsome actor, and “If you like it,” said Na-jung. My impression was that I had a high degree of understanding of the original. I didn’t have this, I had confidence that I would be able to do well, and I wasn’t going to lose my emotions one by one.
Before that, he was a handsome guy, but even if he covered his head, he was a handsome boy, so he struggled to make her dirty. I am looking forward to becoming an actor who can express various things.”
-What is the most elaborate scene?
There are a few of my favorite scenes, but the first one that comes to mind is the one where Hyeon-su becomes a monster when he sees the world ruined in the first ending and a nosebleed occurs. At the end of the 10th episode, it was fun to go out to the front yard filled with soldiers alone in the world purified to white. I don’t think the reaction is bad, but in the 8th ending, Jaehun’s end to save all the residents of the green home is also a satisfying god.

-If you are in a’sweet home’ situation, what kind of choice would you make?
“It’s also found in’Mr. Sunshine’ and’Descendants of the Sun.’ Will I make that choice when faced with a disaster? It seems difficult. I think I have to shut up. Isn’t there a need for the process of becoming us, not me? Whether I am or whoever we become, will we sacrifice anyone. There are great people. There are people who fight hardships. If you want to promote it for a moment,’Jirisan’ is such a story. Honestly, I don’t think I can do well. I will support you.”
