Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the climate change summit held on the 22nd by video. Although the US and Chinese leaders are burned, they are attracting attention as they face each other for the first time.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chun-ying said on the 20th that at the invitation of US President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the climate change summit in China on the 22nd via video.

China’s Xinhua News Agency reported this day, citing a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Xi will present an important discourse at this summit. The content of the discourse is expected to be a content that urges international cooperation in relation to climate change.

Earlier, Xi said at the three countries’ climate summit with France and Germany, “China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Germany and France to cope with climate change.” It shouldn’t be an excuse for a trade barrier,” he stressed.

“China will be fair and will have a common but distinct responsibility, and will realize the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Convention.” He also said, “We will do our best to cooperate with developing countries related to climate change.”

China has been in conflict since the inauguration of President Joe Biden following the predecessor Donald Trump administration. However, it has revealed a policy to cooperate on common international issues such as climate change.

US Climate Envoy John Kerry, who visited China on the 14th to 17th, said in a joint statement with China’s Climate Envoy Shi Jianhua, “The US and China promise to cooperate with each other in dealing with the climate crisis.” It must be taken seriously and urgently.”

However, it will not be easy for the US and China to reach an agreement on carbon emission reduction at this meeting.

President Xi said last year that “China will reduce carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.” However, when the US, which returned to the Paris Agreement after the Donald Trump administration, aggressively insisted on reducing carbon emissions, the US and China situation is different.

China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs (Vice Minister) Ru Yu-cheng said in an interview with foreign media that “the climate response stage is elementary school students in China and middle school students in the United States.

This summit is an affirmation of the return of the United States in responding to global climate change after the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and the removal of environmental regulations.

Leaders of 40 countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, received invitations to the summit, which also attended by President Moon Jae-in. President Putin will also attend the summit and give a speech.

Previously, CNBC predicted that President Biden would present a new reduction target for the United States at this climate summit and promise to fund climate change response from developing countries.

Already, environmental groups and related industries have urged to set a target of at least 50% reduction by 2030. This is twice the current target of the United States, and it is said to be helpful in the Paris Agreement, which aims to ensure that the global average temperature rise does not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrialization.

Although the theme of this summit is limited to’climate change’, the possibility that China’s human rights issues emphasized by the United States will be discussed cannot be ruled out.
