Taiwan’s MediaTek ranked first in the third quarter of smartphone AP shipments

Third Quarter Survey Results, Increasing AP Purchases such as Xiaomi Due to US Sanctions by Huawei

Taiwan MediaTek took the first place in the global application processor (AP) market in the third quarter, surpassing Qualcomm in terms of shipments. However, in terms of sales, Qualcomm, which has a high proportion of premium products, is estimated to have held the top spot. Samsung Electronics ranked third with Apple and Hi-Silicon in terms of shipments.

According to data released by market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 24th (local time), MediaTek occupied 31% of the AP market in the third quarter of this year. This is a 5 percentage point increase from the same period last year. The expansion of the mid-to-low-end (100-$250) smartphone market led to an increase in MediaTek earnings. There were also reflective benefits from the US Huawei sanctions. In China, local companies like Xiaomi took away Huawei’s share of smartphones. Xiaomi’s mediatek chipset purchase volume in the third quarter was more than three times higher than the same period last year.

“The inexpensive MediaTek chipset produced by TSMC was the first option for smartphone manufacturers to quickly fill the gap caused by the absence of Huawei,” said Dale Gai, a counterpoint research researcher.

Qualcomm fell 2 percentage points from the same period last year, recording 29% market share, pushing it to second place. However, when looking at the market share of 5G smartphones, it led the market with 39% share. Counterpoint predicted that there is a high possibility that Qualcomm will regain the top spot in the fourth quarter of this year due to the increasing demand for 5G chipsets. A third of smartphones released in the fourth quarter of this year are expected to support 5G. Apple is also selling the Apple iPhone 12 equipped with a 5G chipset. Counterpoint Research analyzed that “the demand for 5G smartphones more than doubled in the third quarter of this year, and the growth trajectory of 5G will continue.”

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics’ market share fell 4 percentage points from the same period last year. It was only 12% like Hi-Silicon and Apple. During the same period, Apple rose 1 percentage point. The high silicon was unchanged.
