POSCO International will build a mass production system for hydrogen fuel cell separators, called the heart of hydrogen electric vehicles.

POSCO International announced on the 8th that it plans to expand its production capacity to 10,000 tons by 2027 for the hydrogen fuel cell separator’Poss470FC’ currently produced by its subsidiary POSCO SPS. Currently, the production capacity of POSCO SPS is 1,400 tons, which is equivalent to supplying 35,000 hydrogen electric vehicles. Considering this, 10,000 tons is the quantity that can be supplied to 250,000 hydrogen electric vehicles.

The separator is one of the key components of the hydrogen fuel cell stack. The stack is assembled by stacking hundreds of unit cells, and each unit cell is composed of an anode and an anode. The separator serves as a channel for supplying hydrogen to the anode and oxygen to the cathode, and also serves as a support between the unit cells constituting the stack.

The separator of POSCO SPS is characterized by a thin thickness of 0.1mm. It was implemented with POSCO SPS’ surface treatment and precision ultra-thin rolling technology.

The membranes produced by POSCO SPS are applied to hydrogen fuel cells for drones as well as hydrogen electric vehicles, and are expected to spread to mobility markets such as robotics and urban mobility (UAM). According to McKinsey, a global consulting firm, in 2050, the global hydrogen economy market is estimated to be 2,940 trillion won, and the number of hydrogen electric vehicles supplied is 400 million passenger cars and 20 million trucks and buses. The promotion of the Green New Deal project is expected to accelerate the supply of infrastructure such as subsidy for commercial hydrogen electric vehicles and hydrogen production bases.

Jeong Hae-ik, head of POSCO SPS STS Business Division, said, “As the launch of new hydrogen electric vehicle models expands, the demand for materials for’Poss470FC’ is expected to increase rapidly.”
