Medvedev leaps to second place in men’s tennis world


Danil Medvedev (25, Russia) was excited by winning the tour competition one day ahead of the leap to the second place in the men’s professional tennis (ATP) singles world rankings.

Medvedev, ranked 3rd in the world, won Pierrewig Erber (93th, France) 2-1 in the singles final on the last day of the ATP Tour Open13 Provence (total prize money 534,790 euros) held in Marseille, France on the 15th (Korean time). (6-4 6-7 6-4) defeated.

Medvedev, who placed second in the Australian Open in February, won the 10th personal tour singles championship in four months after the ATP Finals in November last year. The prize money to win this competition is 27,615 euros (about 37 million won).

Medvedev was already confirmed to rise to second place in the world rankings released on the 15th last week.

Rafael Nadal (Spain), currently second in the world rankings that is newly updated on this day, will go down to third, and Medvedev will be second.

Players other than Novak Djokovic (1st place Serbia), Nadal, Roger Federer (6th place, Switzerland) and Andy Murray (116th place, UK), who reigned as’Big 4’in men’s tennis recently, rose to second place in the singles world rankings. This is the first time Medvedev has been in 15 years and 8 months since Leighton Hewitt (Australia) in July 2005.

Medvedev said, “It’s always fun to climb the ranks through good results,” he said. “Especially, it is more meaningful to win the championship as it is ranked second in the world this time.

Medvedev, born in 1996, is the best in major competitions with runner-ups at the 2019 US Open and this year’s Australian Open.
