KEPCO establishes 5 new research institute companies

“Expanding technology transfer activities”

KEPCO will expand technology transfer activities by establishing five new research institutes in the field of energy and other fields.

KEPCO announced on the 23rd that it recently decided to establish five new research institutes at its board of directors. A research institute company refers to a company established in a special R&D zone by directly contributing more than 20% of the established capital to commercialize technology developed by public research institutes such as government-funded research institutes and universities. The government is giving these companies a corporate tax cut.

Since 2018, KEPCO has been designated as an institute for establishing a research institute that commercializes its own technology as a venture company in the energy field, and is currently operating eight research institute companies. Two of the five research firms decided to establish this time will settle in the’Naju Jiangsu R&D Special Zone.

The Jiangsu R&D Special Zone is a system that designates and fosters small-scale and high-density intensive spaces as special R&D zones, centering on major technology core institutions located in regions such as universities, research institutes, and public enterprises. The Naju Jiangsu R&D Special Zone was designated as a member of the Naju Innovation City Industry-Academic Research Cluster and the Naju Innovation Industrial Complex in August. KEPCO plans to develop this special zone as Korea’s first public enterprise-type Jiangsu special zone business model and foster it as a regional innovation growth base.

Prior to this, KEPCO held a meeting with the management of eight research institutes currently operating last month to discuss ways to resolve the management difficulties of venture companies in the early stages of their start-up and support the creation of results. These research institutes provide power user behavior and life pattern analysis services using power data, intelligent remote meter reading infrastructure (AMI) element technology such as integrated security chip (SoC) manufacturing, and facility management through digital twin-based augmented reality (AR) implementation. Most of them are engaged in business related to the new energy industry.

A KEPCO official said, “We plan to continue to commercialize R&D so that a virtuous cycle model that leads from the development of new energy technologies to start-ups and technology transfers and commercialization is established.” / Reporter Yang Joon Cho [email protected]
