The domestic rechargeable battery industry, which has been growing rapidly in recent years, is expected to continue its high stride this year.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 18th, the scale of domestic secondary battery production last year increased by 20%, 2.9%, and 11.6% to 22.3 trillion won, export 7.2 trillion won, and domestic demand 5.27 trillion won, respectively.

This is a good performance, with major indicators rising significantly even in the worsening economic situation caused by the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) that has covered the world.

In particular, as the scale of the global electric vehicle (EV) market has expanded, domestic companies’ production, export, and domestic demand have all increased, centering on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. It is an evaluation that is the result of preemptive response.

Accordingly, the market share of major domestic secondary battery makers such as LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation has also improved significantly. As of November last year, the combined market share of the three companies was 34%, more than doubled from the previous year’s 16%.

The outlook for the secondary battery industry this year is also bright. This is because the demand for rechargeable batteries is expected to increase significantly as downstream industries such as electric vehicles and ESS are expanding due to the eco-friendly policies* of major countries such as Europe, the US, and China.

In response to the expansion of the rechargeable battery market, competition is heating up, such as the expansion of competitive facility investment and entry of new companies into the market, but for the time being, a system centered on the top six companies in Korea, China and Japan is expected to continue.

This year, domestic companies’ secondary battery production is expected to reach 30.7 trillion won, an increase of 32.0% compared to the previous year, and exports are also expected to increase by 5.7% to $7 billion. Domestic demand is also expected to increase by 24.1% year-on-year to KRW5.5 trillion thanks to the launch of an electric vehicle platform and new models.

The government is also showing strong will to foster the secondary battery industry. Vice Minister of Industry Park Jin-gyu will visit Misomsystech, a secondary battery solution company located in Anyang City, Gyeonggi-do.

Misumsystech produces secondary battery battery management system (BMS) and battery packs, starting with secondary battery inspection equipment, and recently completed the development of battery packs for electric motorcycle battery replacement platforms.

The battery-replaceable platform is a system that efficiently manages batteries by safely charging personal mobility (PM, Personal Mobility, electric motorcycles, electric bicycles, kickboards, etc.) batteries through common charging facilities instead of individual chargers. It is expected as a way to improve the problems of existing electric motorcycles such as short driving distance, long charging time, and compatibility between batteries.

Deputy Minister Park said, “Last year, the domestic secondary battery industry has grown significantly based on the expansion of global electric vehicle demand, and the market share of domestic companies has also greatly expanded, solidifying its position as the future food industry following BIG3 (system semiconductor, biohealth, future car) “He said, “As the secondary battery industry is expected to grow further this year, the government will not spare full support such as technology development, demonstration, safety technology, and standardization.”
