Vice Chairman Jung Yong-jin opens Myeongdong Rescape and Pangyo Gravity
Fairmont Hotel opened next to’The Hyundai Seoul’ in Yeouido Parkwon, Seoul
Competition for luxury hotels next to the new department stores that open this year is expected to intensify.

This hotel, which will be built on the site of the former Expo Science Park in Daejeon in August, is called’Onoma’. It means’name’ and’fame’ in Greek.
In addition to’Rescape’ in Myeong-dong, Seoul, which opened in 2018,’Grand Chosun’, a five-star hotel in Busan and Jeju, and’Gravity’ in Pangyo have opened. Vice-Chairman Chung’s first proprietary brand, Hotel Rescape, became a hot topic with designer Jacques Garcia, the master of boutique hotel design in charge of designing Paris Hotel Costes and New York Nomad Hotel.
However, there was no hotel brand independently operated by Shinsegae Department Store. Shinsegae owns JW Marriott Hotel Seoul in Banpo, Seoul through Shinsegae Central City, which has been operated by the Marriott Group.
Shinsegae plans to create a newly opened department store in Daejeon as a complex shopping cultural space such as Starfield or Times Square. The Onoma Hotel, which is built next to the department store, is a hotel of its own brand, but the Marriott Group’s reservation system is shared and operated to attract overseas guests.
The hotel will have 200 rooms and will have a large banquet hall and a rooftop (open-air space) restaurant. It is known that it was based on the case of Lotte Department Store in Sogong-dong, Seoul, which is attacking business customers and shoppers at the same time because department stores and affiliated hotels are adjacent.
‘Fairmont’, a luxury hotel brand, will open on February 24 at Park One in Yeouido, Seoul. The Fairmont Hotel is well known for its’The Plaza New York City’ and’Fairmont San Francisco’ in the US, and’The Savoy London’ in the UK. The hotel consists of 31 floors and 326 rooms. Four food and beverage facilities including a rooftop terrace restaurant built on the 29th floor of the hotel, a swimming pool, a spa, a fitness center, and a banquet hall will be built.
The Hyundai Department Store’s ambitious promotion’The Hyundai Seoul’ will open in the center of Park One at the end of February. A cultural space including shopping will be created on an area of 89,100m2. Park One is also connected to the IFC Mall, which has foreign clothing and cosmetics brands, food and beverage industry, and movie theaters through the basement, raising expectations that it will emerge as a new shopping mecca in southwestern Seoul.
Until now, hotels have opened their stores in close proximity to the MICE (corporate conference, convention, exhibition) industry, like COEX and Gwanghwamun in Seoul. However, recently, areas with large floating populations equipped with large-scale shopping and cultural living facilities are popular. An official from Fairmont Ambassador Seoul said, “Yeouido Park1 Complex is close to the largest department store in Seoul and close to the Yeouido business area, so it will create an integrated effect.”
