“Is this about anti-Chinese sentiment?”… Broadcasters are surprised by the successive loss of’Chosun-gu Masa’

The SBS drama’Choseongu Masa’ is suffering from controversy over history distortion. Set in the Joseon Dynasty, this work deals with the unique subject matter of Taejong (Lee Bang-won) and the princes fighting evil spirits.

There are two main controversies.
This is a scene where Chungnyeongdaegun (Sejong) treats mooncakes, Chinese dumplings, and pidan (saked duck eggs) to a Catholic Kuma priest from the Vatican. It was set in Joseon, but with the advent of Chinese food, there were concerns that it could be used in Chinese cultural processes.

In addition, it was pointed out that Taejong was too fictitious, but overly twisted, targeting real people, such as massacre the people after seeing the vision of his father Taejo, or the Choongnyeongdaegun being ignored by the priests and intellects of Guma. It is said that Jeon Ju-yi’s jong-in-hoi side plans to make a formal complaint to SBS, taking the matter into question.

A petition requesting the suspension of the broadcast of’Chosun-gu Masa’ was posted on the Blue House National Petition bulletin board, and 89,000 people agreed by the afternoon of the 24th. In addition, more than 3,900 civil complaints related to’Chosun-gu Masa’ were also received by the Korea Communications Standards Commission. This is a record number compared to 1,500 complaints received in the last two months.

On the 23rd, the production crew of’Chosun Gumasa’ apologized, saying, “We apologize for the inconvenience of watching this scene as a scene that could be misunderstood in a sensitive period.” There was no special intention at all. It was a place to rest the group of the Kumasa priests who had just come to Joseon through the Ming Dynasty, and since it is near the border of the Ming Dynasty, I clarified that I prepared props with the imagination of’there wasn’t there a lot of Chinese traffic’, but the controversy did not subside. I am not. Some netizens are even mocking to change the title to’Chinese Kumasa’, asking if this is an intentional Northeast Fair Drama.

Writer Park Gye-ok, who wrote the script for’Chosun Gumasa’, has a history of controversy over the distortion of history in his previous tvN weekend drama’The Queen Iron Man’. At that time, criticism arose when the “Annals of the Joseon Dynasty” was expressed as “jirashi,” or when Queen Shinjeong appeared as a superstitious character, and protests arose at the family meeting of Pungyangjo. Accordingly, the production crew urgently revised the families of Andong-Kim and Pungyang-jo, who form important axes in the play, to An Song-Kim and Pungan-jo, respectively, and evolved.

Meanwhile, as the controversy spreads, companies that supported advertisements and productions for’Chosun-gu Massa’, such as Samsung Electronics, Ssangbangwool, and Ace Bed, are withdrawing one after another. Through a notice on the website, Kojima said, “I requested withdrawal of the advertisement immediately after recognizing the related issue, but the advertisement was inevitably sent out on the 22nd due to the circumstances of the broadcaster.” “There is no relationship between the contents of the drama and Kojima, and it is produced with a careful attitude. I will apply.”

Broadcasters are surprised that the controversy is expanding like this.
A terrestrial official said, “I thought that if the production crew apologized for wearing Chinese-style props, I thought it would be cut off, but as advertisers were withdrawing one after another as the wave grew, I was surprised.” “I didn’t know that the national anti-China sentiment was so big.”
Popular culture critic Chung Deok-hyun said, “In the recent drama’Vinsenjo’, the’Chosun-gu Masa’ side is too easy in a situation where public opinion is keenly due to China’s Northeast process and cultural process, such as a conflict between South Korean and Chinese netizens over the bibimbap eaten by Song Joong-gi. I think I judged it well,” he said.
