[공존칼럼] A world that sees the surface of Mars in ultra-high definition!

Mars has been called the’red planet’ from a long time ago, and it evokes mystery, fear, fear, the presence or absence of extraterrestrial life, and the scientific community as well as the Earth’s people tried to know the reality of Mars. Mars is about half the size of the Earth, has four seasons, consists of land and rocks, and traces of water have been discovered, making the secret even bigger.

As the space industry began in earnest, the Mars probe was launched and orbited. The era of Mars exploration began in earnest in 1997, when NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) landed a’Sojourner’, called the 1st Mars rover, on Mars and began to roam the surface of Mars. At that time, I couldn’t imagine that the Mars rover’s technological prowess would be as high as it is today.

In 2000, three Mars exploration rovers were landed one after the other and set out on a mission to discover the secrets of the Mars land. And on February 18, 2021, NASA released an ultra-high-definition photograph of an exploration rover exploring the surface of Mars. NASA’s 5th Mars Rover’Persivirance’ is the protagonist.

Percivirence was launched in 2020 and flew through space for seven months and landed successfully on Mars. The progress of NASA’s aerospace engineering can be predicted from the success of Percivence alone. It was breathtaking to see the scene of the exploration rover landing on Mars and the land and landscape of Mars being transmitted in high definition, which NASA released as a video, now on a mobile phone.

Persivirance’s mission is to find the origin of life on Mars. So, the landing map of the rover selects a lake area where water has evaporated and collects soil samples and rocks to find the origin of ancient life. In July of last year, NASA made an ultra-high-definition video of Mars photos collected by two rovers Curiosity and Opportunity on their mission by landing on Mars before Perciviarance was released.

The photographs of Mars taken with Percivirence’s successful landing are so elaborate and vivid that it is expected that Mars exploration will soon make progress beyond imagination. Mars, which appeared in a video released by NASA, looks like it was photographed somewhere on Earth. There are places that look like large and small rocks and layers of fine sand dunes, dried up huge lake floors, and deserted stone fields like an abandoned quarry.

Mars is a planet that has long been a staple material for science fiction based on space. There is a famous anecdote about Mars. Looking at the pictures of Mars, the idea that the Earth we live in is a planet of miracles and feels a great mystery. Mars has close to 95% carbon dioxide, so oxygen is scarce, and living things cannot live. Earth is a planet that has made humans survive for tens of millions of years due to its abundant ecosystems of seas, rivers, lakes and forests. Nowadays, resource depletion and environmental damage are always on the rise, but the Earth is a very beautiful star.

I watched and watched a video of Mars. The red land, which is so desolate and desolate, is a landscape so lonely that tears are formed. As such, the fact that you can realistically see the scene of the Mars exploration rover performing its mission is that the era of full-scale space development is approaching.

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk unveiled his vision for building a city in Mars. Beyond the era where human habitation is limited to the Earth, we are at the stage of throwing our bodies toward space. There is also news that space companies are promoting space travel products.
